
Engine failure almost always announces itself audibly, long before it shows up in how the car drives. The difficulty is that not every noise from under the bonnet is engine damage, and not every harmless-sounding tick stays harmless.
Three questions settle most cases. When does the noise appear: on a cold start, at idle, under load? Does it change with engine speed, and if so, does it keep time with the crankshaft or run at half that rate? And where exactly does it come from: high up at the valve cover, low down near the oil pan, or not from the engine at all?

Three noises mean stop the car now. A hard metallic knock from low in the engine that grows louder under load and quickens exactly in time with engine speed points to a failed rod bearing. A deeper, duller hammering that is audible at idle and does not fade as the engine warms comes from the main bearings. And any clattering that arrives together with the oil pressure warning light means the engine has lost oil pressure. In all three cases, switch off and do not drive on.
Two more belong in a workshop soon, though they will not strand you. A rattle lasting one to three seconds immediately after a cold start indicates a stretched timing chain, or a tensioner that has bled off its oil pressure. A bright metallic ping under acceleration, often called spark knock, is detonation in the combustion chamber, usually caused by octane that is too low or ignition timing that has drifted.
A steady tick from high in the engine, running at half engine speed, is usually harmless and comes from valve clearance or a hydraulic lifter; monitoring it is enough. Two further noises are not engine damage at all. A squeal on cold start that tracks engine speed is the serpentine belt, and a grinding that happens only while cranking is the starter motor.

This is the sound every mechanic recognises instantly and nobody wants to hear. A hard, metallic knock from low in the engine that gets noticeably louder under load, and whose rhythm accelerates exactly in time with engine speed.
The cause is excessive clearance between the connecting rod bearing and the crankshaft journal. On every power stroke the rod hammers against the crank. It usually traces back to oil starvation, stretched oil change intervals, or a drop in oil pressure.
If you hear this: pull over, switch off, call a tow truck. Driving on generally costs the entire engine block, because the rod eventually breaks and destroys the crankshaft and cylinder wall on the way out.
Deeper and duller than rod knock, clearly audible at idle, and it does not go away as the engine warms. The crankshaft's main bearings are worn. The same rule applies: driving on destroys the engine.
There is a quick way to tell them apart. Rod knock is load-dependent and gets louder when you open the throttle; main bearing knock is there at idle regardless.
A one-to-three-second rattle immediately after cranking, which then disappears, is the classic symptom of a stretched timing chain or a tensioner that bleeds off oil pressure when the engine sits.
This is not acute engine damage, but it is the warning shot before a very expensive one. If the chain jumps a tooth, valves meet pistons. On many engines of this design that is an economic write-off. Ignoring the rattle for months is how people get there.
A fine, even tick from above, running at half engine speed, almost always comes from the valvetrain, either excessive valve clearance or a hydraulic lifter that no longer fills properly.
The half-speed detail is the giveaway. In a four-stroke engine the camshaft turns at half crankshaft speed. A noise keeping time with the crank lives at the bottom of the engine; one keeping time with the cam lives at the top. Valvetrain ticking is unpleasant, rarely acutely dangerous.
A bright metallic ping when accelerating under load, often described as a rattle or “spark knock”, is detonation in the combustion chamber. The mixture ignites uncontrolled, ahead of the spark.
The usual causes are octane that is too low, incorrect ignition timing, combustion chamber deposits, or a failed knock sensor. Sustained detonation destroys piston crowns and head gaskets. Switching to higher-octane fuel is the short-term test; if the pinging persists, the car needs scanning.

With metallic knocking, dull hammering or an illuminated oil pressure warning light the rule holds without exception: engine off, coast to a stop, do not restart. Every further revolution increases the damage. A tow truck is cheaper than a replacement engine.
For every other noise: read out the fault memory, check the oil level and oil quality, and record the sound with your phone. A recording that captures a cold start, idle and a blip of the throttle is worth more to any workshop than any description.
In practice, a rod bearing failure means a replacement engine. On a car past the ten-year mark the cost regularly exceeds the residual value, and the repair simply no longer adds up.
